Finally, the societal change model involves making changes in the physical social and economic environment by changing policies and attitudes in society rather than individuals. These changes may require laws to be enforced as they are generally on a large scale; also they make health behaviours more acceptable.
One advantage of the societal change model is that it is a law and therefore it must be followed and there are consequences for individuals who break the law which results in people being more likely to follow the law. However a weakness of this approach is that some individuals are social rebels and will continue to ignore these changes despite it being a law. As a result since not all people who break the law is caught then it would allow those to continue to break the law resulting in other people’s health being compromised. We decided to use this model because we understood that as our health promotion was for sixth form students that this model would be the best because this model would allow us to educate and raise awareness on the issues of binge drinking and it allowed us to deliver necessary information to them that would allow them to make the right choice for themselves while having the right information to support them in making an informed decision.
Unlike the medical model that we could not have used due to it being led by experts this model does not require us to be experts and therefore we believe that we would be able to sufficiently communicate to the students about the issue of binge drinking. Furthermore the medical model would not be appropriate for the topic of binge drinking that we choice as this model involves medical intervention and there have not been any medical discovers in terms of medical intervention that can be used for binge
