In China, older people are venerated, given deference, and valued in nearly every task. Individualism, Independence, and self-reliance are core values that influence the aging process. In the United States older people are seen as dependent, and cultural values dictate that older people living independently are given higher regard than those requiring assistance. As many people get older they strive to maintain their independence and to avoid becoming a burden to their family. Lately values of aging appear to be changing this has been influenced by political and market forces. The media has presentations of long-lived, vibrant older adults with nursing beside those of nursing home horror stories. Older adults acknowledge the hardships of aging but also see a reason to continue to live. Positive aging means to love, to work, to learn something we did not know yesterday and to enjoy the remaining precious moments with our loved ones. The Americans Changing Lives study was designed to change a dilemma which is whether increased life expectancy in the United States and other developed nations foreshadowed a scenario of longer life but worsening health as a result of the chronically ill. Many factors contribute to how someone will age such as early poverty, poor environmental conditions, poor education, Lifetime of poverty, race, and gender. Many people do not consult older people for advice because they think that they cannot understand what is going on in today’s times. For example, some people do not what to hear what their grandparents have to say about their relationships because they feel like “Oh, those were the old days.” Or “You do not understand because you all did not have technology back them.” Also a lot of people also believe that older people shouldn’t live vibrant lives because they could hurt
