n epic; an ancient story most likely passed through generations orally. Mostly consist of some form of heroic act or legendary figure. What about recent stories they will eventually be considered “ancient”. Mulan a Disney movie created in 1998 embodies the majority of aspects that create an epic. Although not all characteristics of an epic are illustrated in Mulan the movie should still be considered one.
An epic always has one main character that performs all the courageous acts. In Mulan that character is Mulan. Mulan is a simple girl that lives with her parents and grandmother in China. Her father was one of the best soldiers that China used to have until fighting became too much for his body. Mulan being his daughter came from a family where she must always bring honor to her family.

On her own she decides to leave her family and become part of the Chinese army. In doing so Mulan has become a main part in saving China. When the Hund’s attack, however she is discovered as a girl and that shakes the entire army. China does not believe that girls should be in the army therefore Mulan should be killed. However instead Mulan is left behind to find her way back to her family, whose honor has been destroyed even more.

An epic hero is defined as a character in an epic poem who is noble and brave and is affected by great events or admired for his achievements, during the course of this class we have read of many epic heroes; two of my favorites being Gawain and Belinda. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain is one of King Arthur’s faithful knights, and embodies the nature of what a hero is. Heroes are people who are meant to uphold the greater good, and do what is right in the face of adversity; and if they fail to do what is right in the face of adversity, they are meant to right their wrong, Sir Gawain does all of these things. When King Arthur answered the green knight’s call, Sir Gawain stood in King Arthur’s place, and swung at the…

Both the characters Mulan and Squeaky are fighting the stereotype of girls, since they have someone in their daily lives who is disappointed in who they are and is trying to make them someone they are not. For example, in the movie, Mulan’s parents want Mulan to “look like a bride” and “bring honor to the family” while Squeaky’s mother wants Squeaky to “act like a girl” and wear a “white organdy dress with a big satin sash”. Both Mulan and Squeaky learn the power of confidence during their respective journeys. Mulan learns to show her true self in front of her family, no matter what they think, and Squeaky learns to slow down a little and enjoy life more. Though both of their lives may not be perfect, they both realize that being true to yourself earns respect in…

Why the movie Mulan is impractical? During that age in China, the lily foot was considered one of the highest forms of feminines beauty. Lily feet are acquired by wrapping long, strong strips of cloth around a woman's feet ultimately dis forming them. This process often left women incapable of walking. The thought process behind this practice was, "If a woman could not walk then she must be extremely wealthy and not need her feet for work."…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…

Other examples of Grandmother Fa’s knowledge of traditional beliefs are evident in “Honor To Us All.” Grandmother Fa’s verse explains how an apple will grant Mulan serenity, a pendant will give her balance, and jade will bring her beauty. Also, Grandmother Fa reiterates the cricket’s luck and jokes how with Cri-Kee “even [Mulan] can’t blow it.” Another example of Grandmother Fa’s comic relief is when she disagrees with the Matchmaker’s initial impression of Mulan, “Who spit in her bean curd?” At the end of the film, Mulan’s parents are happy to have her back home and are less concerned with her being the perfect bride.…
