Where did I come from, where am I going, and why am I here? People have been trying
to figure out these questions for centuries. Many vast theories and ideas have been
presented whether that be science or religious based. Many people have provided some
well thought out ideas, but unfortunately incomplete. Who would know the answers to
these questions but the creator of man who played a sole part in where we came from?
There are many voices that claim different things, but it is only through asking God
where we get to learn the truth. This is where the Doctrine and Covenants plays a unique
role. Joseph Smith, who first asked the question, “Which of …show more content…
The Doctrine and Covenants goes on to tell us more about whom some of
God’s children chose to follow. A third portion, “of the hosts of heaven turned… away
from [God] because of their agency; And they were thrust down, and thus came the devil
and his angels” (D&C 29: 37-38). The Doctrine and Covenants is set apart from other
scripture by giving God’s children such specific detail about where did we come from
and why are we here. In particular, since Joseph Smith always sought for continuing
revelation, we discover more about the pre-mortal life and why we need a savior. No
other book of scripture goes into as much detail about the true nature of Satan, and how
the origin of agency affected mankind. By studying the pre-mortal life in the Doctrine
and Covenants, we realize why agency is such an integral role to our existence on earth.
Agency
From our pre-mortal existence we learned that agency is a valuable part of the
plan of salvation. The Doctrine and Covenants shows us that “ I, the Lord God, make you
free, therefore ye are free indeed; and the law also maketh you free” (D&C 98: 8). God
has given us agency since the beginning of time in the preexistence. Agency is vital to …show more content…
Jesus Christ underwent the most immense pain so that he could provide us
with the most immense joy. He did this for us, knowing that many of God’s children
would reject this gift freely given.
Another part of the Atonement that is shown in the Doctrine and Covenants is
God’s mercy for little children. Many other religions hold onto the belief that men are
born into original sin and must be baptized as infants or they will go to hell. Revelation in
the latter days has clarified the truth of infant baptism that had been lost. As Joseph Smith
was preparing for a conference in 1830, the Lord provided the revelation that, “little
children are redeemed from the foundation of the world through mine Only Begotten”
(D&C 29: 46). This revelation illustrates why the plan of salvation is called the plan of
happiness. It is because the plan is centered on Jesus Christ who lovingly atoned for us.
The Lord additionally explains why agency is important in this revelation. Children under
a certain age do not have the mental capacity yet to be aware of the consequences of their
actions. A loving God would not hold such children accountable. The plan of salvation
explains how all is made right through
