“Martin Luther King Jr., “Beyond Vietnam a Time to Break Silence.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr delivered his speech on April 4, 1967, at Riverside Church in New York City. In paragraph one Dr. King explained his reasoning for talking about the war in Vietnam and the struggle in America. He provides evidence regarding the poverty in American and how he had hope for change with the new poverty program, but with the buildup in Vietnam, the program was canceled. Dr. King’s speck is filled with pathos, thought out his speech King applies images to explain the disgusts of the war to awaken anger at its injustice. The use of ethics is important to convince people to do the right thing regarding the war and how African American have been treated. King explains the Vietnam war as something that is harming the nation. He gives the example of white and African American soldiers fighting in Vietnam side by side, but if not in war, they wouldn’t have gone to the same school or walk side by side. He debates the fact that people shouldn’t fight overseas for freedom before freedom is established to them in their everyday lives. The war is blamed for reducing the funding for poverty project. Kings states that the war has drawn men and funding away from the areas and people most needing it.
Kings speech is mostly effective and dedicated to young black men who see violence as the only way to solve problems because that’s what the US does often. He stresses the number of people who are negatively impacted by this conflict, he states “For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent.” Martin Luther King Jr. emphases the Vietnam War negative effects and proves that the war is ripping the country further apart, between racial and social and economic
