The theme of “silence” is a primary symbol in the two poems “Legend” and “Drinking Alone Beneath the Moon.” However, each poem expresses the idea of silence differently based on the author’s cultures. They not only express silence, but also articulate contemplation. However, on account of the dissimilar cultures of the two authors, “Legend” has a fiery love behind it, while “Drinking Alone Beneath the Moon” has an occupied loneliness.
Although the different contexts of culture will give these poems different ways of expression, they lead to the same kinds of basic reasons that are shaped by the poets’ different cultures. These four poems employ the scene of a poet drinking at night alone and use the activity of drinking liquor to create a sense of contemplative silence. The first spread the most extensively, because the speaker echoes the political frustration and lonely, sad feelings of Li Bai. The second one was created to interpret the advantages of liquor. Li Bai thought that gods in heaven loved it, so all of the humans should love it as well. The third one describes his search for spiritual comfort from the liquor so he can escape the pain of the true world. He uses irony in this poem, mentioning to express complaint, or using happiness to state pain. That is the main characteristic of his poetic art performance, but also his artistic success. The fourth poem borrows allusions to write about the benefits of drinking, which can be interpreted as Li Bai being intoxicated with
