Edgar Segura And Mejia Character Analysis

Great Essays
Mendota was a small, town team that's aspirations were to go play for the state championship. On the backs of Edgar Segura and Robert "Beta" Mejia, with the help of the community supporting them throughout their whole journey. The People of Mendota are very diligent and industrious people; who work day and night to make ends meet. They work out in the fields for minimum pay, but they have no other places to work or go; because this is where their family is not necessarily blood relatives. Mendota Is a town of approximately 7,000 people and 73% of them are Hispanic people, of the Hispanics 100% of them work the fields including the high school students(espn.com). Most average high schoolers don’t have a hard manual labor job to work before …show more content…
A running back. Edgar was the guy for Beta and with that came a new father figure for Edgar, Beta would guide him through middle school and into high school grooming him to be the star of the team and do big things for himself. Edgar was given a second life and was able to continue playing football.
When asked Edgar says that football is his way out and that his family depends on him to be good, and that is why he works so hard to be great. Not only is Edgar just good for Mendota he is even one of the top players in California. With his 2,000 plus yards rushing and 1,000 plus receiving yards Edgar leads the state in total yards with one player. Edgar may be a great player and all, in the end Edgar would not receive a scholarship to a single division one school due to his criminal record and bad past.
Along with a very trying past, most of the players on the team have or they are going down the bad path. The mix of having very little money, criminal records, and the possibility of having no papers cause some pretty big controversy with the other schools about if they should be allowed to play or not. Many other school looked at the team as a waste of their time or even not worthy of stepping on the same field as them calling them names of all sorts, such as “basura” and “malo” each of which mean

The team took a great loss, losing a plate like Edgar. Not only did he lead the teacher in touchdowns; he also lead by example and helped the team off the field.
Edgar returns for his senior year looking to come away with a college scholarship and become the first in his family to attend college. Not many believed in him in fact many people from surrounding cities and schools would write him things saying "you can't make it" "you aren't good enough" (mendota web). With all the doubters Aztecs took on their final year and made it a triumphant one. With Edgar returning they now have acquired 36 more touchdowns in one person (maxpreps.com web). Segura was doubted because of the fact that he did not play his Junior year and they believed he lost his edge. Working in the fields and doing the type work that he did made it very easy to stay in shape’ in fact it made him come back even more ready than before because he was well rested and was not beaten up from the previous season. “By his senior year at Mendota High, Segura was 5-foot-9 and weighed 200 pounds, with bowing ball shoulders. He was an all-state athlete, bench pressing 255 pounds, squatting 455 and running a 4.6-second 40-yard dash. When he graduated in 2014, he owned the state scoring record with 900 points, and had won a pair of California Interscholastic Federation titles. He rushed for a record 8,030 yards and scored 137 touchdowns
