Elsa Pardo Dance Center

To understand the primary method of communication between the teachers and students at Elsa Pardo Dance Center, I analyzed their studio Facebook page. This page is where the instructors update the students on upcoming rehearsals, class cancellations, changing schedules, special events, and performances. The page is updated on a daily basis by the Director of the BRAVO Competition Company and posts range in content, from simple reminders to lengthy descriptions of competition details, the dancers are able to stay informed and updated on any new information. The Facebook page is also used to tag specific students and parents on posts, ensuring that all members are notified of important information. From this source, I learned that the Facebook …show more content…
Pardo was able to interact with her students face-to-face. As I observed the class I focused on the various ways in which the teacher communicated with her students. Before the class commenced, the dancers were already warming up and stretching, preparing for their instructor. When Mrs. Pardo walked in, she organized her stereo equipment, her notebooks, and the students took that as a cue to take their places at the barre. The class consisted of Mrs. Pardo’s dance lessons, written in her notebook, as she would speak it aloud and physically demonstrate the dance terms. Continuously, returning back to the stereo system, she would prepare the music and the dancers would begin practicing. While the students trained, Mrs. Pardo was keen on giving corrections to critique the students’ movement. Throughout this consistent process there was a level of respect maintained by the students, no one talked unless it was to ask a question and there were no hasty interruptions during the …show more content…
As the students took the class, they were prepared and respectful towards the instructor, no students were late and as soon as the instructor was ready to begin, the class commenced. The rules I discovered allowed me to see that the interaction that occurred within the classroom setting was very routine and specific. The majority of the physical and verbal communication was being done by Mrs. Pardo. As different exercises were given, the she would analyze the movements of the students and give them things to fix and general tips. With the addition of these corrections, Mrs. Pardo was able to instruct her students by using proper ballet terminology, hand gestures, and even tapping the student’s arms and legs to fix technique. I learned through this observation that most of the face-to-face communication happening between the instructors and the students within the studio is central to the education and the instructor. This observation revealed to me the specific ways in which efficient communication occurs within the class setting, as it is reserved for communication focused on

Throughout Copeland’s younger years, her mom was jumping in and out of relationships with different men meaning they were constantly moving around. While Copeland was in the middle of legal disputes between her mom and a dance teacher she said, “It was important to me that I not miss too many days of dance class. So a couple weeks after going back home to Mommy, I was thrilled to be in a studio again, turning my focus back to ballet” (127). This quote explains to the reader how focused Copeland was on ballet as well as how eager she was to get back to ballet just after two weeks off. Furthermore, Copeland stated “Dance was still the center of my life” (133).…

    Dance Studio Analysis

Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…

Many people often wonder, “How is ballet dancing and writing similar?” The only good answer to that commonly asked question is that both require alone time to hone individual skills and time with peers to get feedback. If one were to look at Dancers in the Foyer by Edgar Degas, they would see multiple ballerinas stretching in an otherwise empty room. The image of the ballerinas stretching on their own reflects how writers often write freely without restrictions to release their mind and flex their writing muscles. While most writers generally start and finish works on their own, unlike ballerinas who usually perform together and are judged together, both receive constructive criticism from others either during their preparation or after their…

I have chosen to review the Alberta Ballet’s performance of Love Lies Bleeding for my dance production critique. Preceding the show I had relatively low expectations since I am not an Elton John fan and the show was set to his music and was inspired by his journey. Fortunately, my expectations were surpassed considerably. Love Lies Bleeding was a zestful, dynamic, and alluring theatrical experience unlike no other.…

The hero’s journey is a formula for the logical path a hero takes to accomplish a specific goal. It includes stages, which mark the hero's progression through what they know and don't know. It is used for all story arcs. The journey is literal or mental, and in the end, the hero changes (Volger). As I completed my final exam in Ballet II, I was a little sadden that our time was over with Professor Jennings, but I couldn’t be any happier how well I’ve improved and how well I performed it. I made sure that applied all corrections to barre and center work that was given to the class as well as given to me specifically. The two goals that I set for myself at midterm are two goals that I’m not going to say I’ve accomplished, but I definitely can say I have improved. I am going to take these two goals with me as I progress into second semester. The one major thing that I am going to take away with me from this course is, the use of my head when performing.…

“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…

However, because all of the participants in this study are college-aged dancers — and dance in collegiate settings — most did not cite age as being a perceived issue among their peers just yet. Hall responded by saying, “Because I train alongside my peers, students who are the same age/around the same age as me, I don 't really perceive age to be much of a factor within my day to day interactions.” Firstenberg, agrees that age is not a factor that is considered in collegiate level dance spaces. She says, “I feel like as a dancer in college, age isn’t as imperative as it is in the ‘real world.’ College is like one of those places where time stops for four years.”…

During this observation one of the first things I notice was how large the gymnasium was. For this class and class period I got to see how the teacher really took advance of it and used it to her benefit. Due to the fact the space was large enough allowed all the students’ time to participate in activities with minimal time lost in waiting and transition. As a result of a shorter wait time allowed the students to be active or participate in class longer. During this period I got to observe how the teacher really utilized her space in the gym for an introduction to the lesson as well as the activities that followed.…
