Thus there is the need to be guided and guarded from predators. The shepherd comes in handy to fulfil these roles.
Every shepherd is noted for carrying both the rod which serves as staff also. The rod is for judgment and punishment and the staff for correction and comfort. He doesn’t need to carry two separate sticks to exercise these functions. When the sheep strays, the rod is always handy to make it fall in line while the staff is for a tap on the back for being of good behaviour. This is what is known today as the carrot and stick approach in handling human issues in management circle.
Jesus is the Lamb of God. He is equally the Lion of the tribe of Judah. When it was essential for Him to appear as a sheep, He did and was sacrificed for our sins.
