The movie Selena is about a Mexican- American girl who is raised at a young age to be a musician. The movie starts with her as a girl singing in her dad's restaurant and ends with her singing at some fairly large events. During her road to fame she endured a few hardships, like being evicted from the family home and also being told she can’t date or marry the lead guitarist. She is then tragically killed by the organizer of her fan club.
In the movie, it is often referenced that Selena is a woman in Latina music, because it is a male dominated profession. The fact that she is successful in a male dominated genre of music is impressive, especially since she became successful in this music at such a young age.
