After the battle of San Jacinto many of Santa Anna’s men were killed and others were imprisoned including Santa Anna. He then signed papers ordering all Mexican forces to leave Texas and recognized the independence of Texas. Mexico tried to regain Texas but they were not successful. Texas faced many problems with Mexico, the US and the local Indian tribes during approximately ten years that it was a republic. Sam Houston was the first President of Texas, and he also served as Governor and Senator when Texas accepted statehood. Texas became the 28th state on December 29, 1845 (Richardson, et al. 88, 94).
There were different theories as to why the Texas Revolution started. One of the theories was that Texas was supposed to be attached to the US. Other theories were that there were many cultural and ethnic differences. Others claimed the military had too much authority over the people, and that there would never be a democracy or peaceful prosperity. Slavery was also an implied cause for the revolution. There will always be the uncertainty as to the causes of the Texas Revolution, and if the true goal of the revolution was for independence, or if they were after a more democratic
