Averaged over the three school years, about 28.3 of schools, reported that withholding recess from students that had inappropriate behavior was not allowed. Likewise, 26.7 of schools did not allow withholding recess from students for academic reasoning. So by looking at these results, a large amount of schools still withhold students from recess for inappropriate behavior and/or academic reasoning. In the article it says that a revision of school policies to prohibit withholding recess and to strengthen existing policies, may help keep children active during school.
After reading this interesting article, I believe that withholding is still the “go-to” consequence for inappropriate behaviors and/or academic reasoning. I think that teachers do this because it is simple and actually seems to work with certain students. I know it worked for me because that was the last time I got in any trouble in school. I was not surprised by the results of the survey because if you into an elementary teacher’s classroom, “stay in from recess” will be on the consequence
