An Ethical Approach on Abortion
Pro-choice: The radical idea that women are people. In today’s society pro-life and pro-choice are common words that have developed into one of the largest debates nationwide. While abortion is a seemingly growing subject matter, over time, not much has changed. There are many studies and individual opinions imputed into the ideas of what is right and wrong in the sense of abortion, but that’s not what this paper is about, although the title may have confused you. Penner (2008) believes personhood to be defined as follows, “possession of a range of psychological capacities such as the capacity for thought and self-consciousness.” While this definition may seem as close to what personhood really means, when does personhood begin to develop in a fetus? At the point of conception there isn’t a sense of consciousness, in fact most women don’t know when they have conceived, but generally gain knowledge of their first missed period which can be up to four weeks later. In another source, Dennett (no date) brings up the argument many others seem to forget, which living human beings are granted personhood; Dennett mentions, “human beings declared insane by a licensed psychiatrist are denied personhood.” This statement may spark an interest by proving even living humans can be denied the rights involved with …show more content…
What we have done, in other states such as Arizona, is create new laws to make a boundary for abortions. For example, the article “Abortion Rights—Parental Consent Requirement…” states the following, “The Arizona Court of Appeals held that a minor seeking judicial bypass of the state’s parental consent requirement must show fitness for bypass,” (2004). With these laws intact, there is a protection against young teens continuously seeking these kinds of solutions to
