Pro-choice: The radical idea that women are people. In today’s society pro-life and pro-choice are common words that have developed into one of the largest debates nationwide. While abortion is a seemingly growing subject matter, over time, not much has changed. There are many studies and individual opinions imputed into the ideas of what is right and wrong in the sense of abortion, but that’s not what this paper is about, although the title may have confused you. Penner (2008) believes personhood to be defined as follows, “possession of a range of psychological capacities such as the capacity for thought and self-consciousness.” While this definition may seem as close to what personhood really means, when does personhood begin to develop in a fetus? At the point of conception there isn’t a sense of consciousness, in fact most women don’t know when they have conceived, but generally gain knowledge of their first missed period which can be up to four weeks later.
