Ewell really did. Mr. Ewell beat Mayella for kissing Tom. Tom’s lawyer, Atticus, fights in court to show people that Mr. Ewell is the one that beat his daughter. Everyone knows who is guilty, but no one wants the white man to be put in jail. If a white man and black man are in court together, the white man is going to win. After everyone knows that Tom is clearly the innocent one, the jury still says he is guilty. Tom could not win because of his skin color. Because of his race people did not stand up for what was right. Tom is sent to prison and is later on killed. He is not killed because he “raped” Mayella. He is shot because he tried to run away from the prison. After everything he dies because of something he did not do. An innocent man that was only trying to help out a girl he felt bad for is now dead. White people could not give up their values to do the right thing.
