Stanley McChrystal suggests in his essay, Lincoln’s Call to Service – and Ours, that a program be created called, Universal National Service. McChrystal believes that this program “will change the current cultural expectation that service is only the duty of those in uniform” (564). I agree with the need for such a program and feel that it would greatly benefit our country. If this program is created it will allow young individuals to get a feel for military life.…

If you were to go by the North Platte mall on a Thursday evening, chances are you might see a bunch of young guys doing some sort of ridiculous workout on the hard asphalt parking lot. You might wonder what in the world they are doing out there. They are a special breed of people, selfless, motivated, and ready to join the United States Marine Corps. I am proud to say that I am apart of those workouts and ready to serve my country. It’s incredible to think how young some of these guys are, and their willingness to lay down their lives.…

“The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him,” said G.K. Chesterton. A love for their country is why my veterans serve. It never really sunk into me how much veterans sacrifice for us. I think that we need to show as much respect to people that have served in the military forces to make us be able to be free. Or be able to pursue whatever we would like to.…

I have always considered myself a true Patriot, and attending West Point and serving my country will prove the extent of my patriotism. My entire life, as short as that may seem to some, I have striven to better myself, improve my core values and sharpen my mental strength. As a younger adult achieving the rank of Eagle in scouting helped me focus on these efforts.…
