In the story Into the Wild, Chris McCandless drops everything and everyone to journey into the wild to become someone who no one knows. Author Jon Krakauer, tells a story about Chris McCandless’s new journey in the wild. He wants to forget everything that happened in the past and start new. Chris McCandless can be described as reckless,selfish and adventurous individual. Chris McCandless can be described as selfish for many reasons. One example of him being selfish was when he held off all letters to his family until he got into the Alaskan bush to where he could not communicate back with them. On page 22 it says “Chris had instructed the post office to hold them until August 1st, apparently so we wouldn’t know anything was up.” This shows that Chris did want to have any communication with his family

This is apparent when Chris would settle down with a job and a place to live along with nice people to help and take care of him then all of the sudden would up and leave everything behind and move on. On page 22 it says “By then Chris was long gone. Five weeks earlier he loaded all his belongings into his little car and headed west without an itinerary.” This shows that Chris is reckless by getting a job and then giving up and moving on, he gets somewhere and meets new people but then up and leaves everyone behind just like he did his family. Another example of Chris being reckless is when he gets to the Detrital Wash and disobeys what the warning signs. On page 27 it says “Ignoring posted warnings that off-road driving is strictly forbidden, McCandless steered the Datsun off the pavement where it crossed a broad, sandy wash.” This means that Chris doesn’t care to listen to what people say. He thinks that he knows and can do things on his own. As one can see Chris was reckless with the choices he makes, he thinks he knows everything and doesn’t care to listen to the good advice people give him along the
