Goodness of the Grinch

What is true goodness? Are you born with it, or do you have to change yourself to be good? How much is related to the environment that surrounds you? An example of refinding goodness is the story of the Grinch. He started off as a good “person,” later changed when he had had enough of the teasing just because of how he looked, and later managed to rediscover the good he had in him from the beginning. This is his story.
In the beginning of the Grinch’s story, he starts off by falling from the sky into the hands of complete strangers. Already you can tell that he is different, but is still good. To prove this, he seems to be a happy infant from the way he is always smiling and cheerfully eating the Santa plate.

Julia, you presented good points for your chosen criticism, however this poem is related most to the Marxist theory of criticism. His sad childhood left him to believe that it is the materialistic things that are the true meaning of Christmas. Due to this belief, The Grinch was seen as the lower class because he did not have many possessions. Throughout the poem, one can see the difference between both social classes, which is why Marxist is the most valid criticism for this piece.…

Repentance is another important factor in achieving redemption. It is more spiritual than asking for forgiveness for things you have wrongfully done.
