Bob Ewell is extremely displeased because Atticus is actually trying to prove that Tom Robinson is not guilty. He goes up to Atticus and spits in his face. Bob tells Atticus that he will get his revenge no matter what, even if it takes him his whole life. He ends up going after Scout and Jem. He manages to break Jem's arm in spite of the fact that his intention was to kill both Jem and Scout. Atticus is in a heated situation with the mob, trying to protect Tom from getting killed while he's in jail. Gates was utterly untroubled when she found out that Tom Robinson was getting convicted. She continued on to say it was a good way to keep the colored people in their place. When speaking to her class about Hitler doing evil things to Jews, she was distressed. Furthermore, Mrs. Merriweather states that in the North, they are considered hypocrites because they set the blacks free but won't have anything to do with them. She says that in the South, people have everything sorted out. Whites can do what they want and blacks can too, but they are not allowed because of the Jim Crow laws. To end the hypocrisy in To Kill a Mockingbird, Aunt Alexandra is extremely conceited to the point where she says the Finches are better than everyone else in
