What is a reasonable time to keep patients waiting? In the waiting room, patients should be waiting less than 10 minutes to get called on and get into the exam room. In the exam room the patient should be waiting less than 20 minutes to see the doctor not the tech or the nurse. It is very important that the patient’s time is respected. Longer the wait, the more patients get frustrated by not being able to see their doctor in a reasonable amount of time. Thus it is better for the wait times to be as little amount of time as possible. The patients should be told how much time it would be approximately before the doctor could see them rather than just letting them sit and wait for longer than they should not knowing when their doctor can see them. If the wait time for their doctor is too long, ask if the patients would like to see another doctor other than their own especially if the wait time for them would be shorter.
