Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz is a Cuban Politian and revolutionary who ruled Cuba for almost 5 decades. In 1959 he seized control as dictator due to Fulgencio Batista (the former dictator) being disliked by the people of Cuba because of the lack of a genuine alternative to his regime, economic problems and unemployment. To over throw him Castro led revolts and offered an alternative type of leadership which made him popular with the citizens and ultimately prime minister.
Fidel Castro was born near Birán in Cuba's eastern Oriente Province on 13th August. Castro was born out of wedlock. Only 18 of them survived including Castro, his brother Raúl and Guevara. After the battle with no supplies or weapons they took refuge deep in the Sierra Maestra Mountains in south eastern Cuba. But by early 1957 they were already attracting recruits and winning small battles against Rural Guard patrols and from then on launched larger battles against the government and won. By November 1958, Castro's forces controlled most of Oriente and Las Villas, and divided Cuba in two by closing major roads and rail lines, severely disadvantaging Batista. Batista tried to crush the uprising with a massive offensive with air force bombers and naval offshore units. The guerrillas held their ground and ultimately defeated Batista on January 1, 1959.
