Extend School Hours Essay

Improved Essays
I strongly disagree with the Dickenson County School Board extending each school day by one and a half hours. There are too many hours in a school day already. Extending the school day will only stress students out more. Additionally, students and staff members may have other curricular activities they do in the afternoons, and lastly, the school has a bounteous amount of school hours, adding extra hours is extremely overrated. However, the school board has a lot on its plate, it needs to observe all of the negative effects it will put on students and staff members before it makes a decision. To begin with, I do not think it is a bright idea to extend the school days by one and a half hours. Consequently, it will stress students out more than what they already are. For instance, students have too many …show more content…
However, having an extension will interfere with all of the activities students and staff members do in the afternoons. Such as, staff members may have children they need to attend too, or students may have sports, clubs, or other interesting activities they are involved in, and with the extra extension they will not have the availability to do those activities. Therefore, adding more school hours messes up students and staff members agenda for the afternoons. For this purpose, I do not think extra school hours should be in the picture.
Lastly, the school has a bounteous amount of school hours already, adding more is extremely overrated. School hours already tackles most of the day without the extra time added. Having incredibly long school days will only make the students more exhausted. Long and exhausting school hours is very overrated, students should have the privilege to dive in other indulging activities instead of school work all day. However, students already go to school for too many hours, adding more hours will be extremely difficult on the

Do you really want longer school years? Making school years longer for children would make it harder because they wouldn’t do any work or not even care. One reason I think that their should not be longer school years is to have children do things outside of school. Also the shorter the school year will be the more they have to learn and study. Therefore, I believe that the more time kids spend in school the less time they'll have outside of school.…

The Mill Valley High School Board members should reject the proposed idea of a later school day because it is beneficial to students with after school activities such as sports and jobs. The idea that a later school day is beneficial towards students is preposterous because students with after school activities and jobs would need to be out of school at an earlier hour. Take John Sherwood’s testimony for example. He complains, “But it’s going to make football practice a nightmare. We won’t be able to be dressed and on the field until 4:45, and in October, it starts getting dark by 5:30...…

Last resource I found that parents who jump into harsh conclusion when asking about changing the schedule. Parents believed that if the clock and schedule changed it will impact their own personal schedules. They can also worry about the students getting out of school too late and maybe walking alone in the dark and sport practices which take up time as well. I found these concerns reasonable however I believed the school or district should do something about the academic school clock and maybe more things would improve…

The school board plans to add one and a half hours to school each day. Do you agree or disagree with the school board extending the average school day? I have a mildly, strong disliking for this poorly and stupid thought out idea. The truth is school is already quite lengthy and it would be a dreadful idea to add more time. I would not be able to have anytime for the activities that I and many others do.…

Life can be a hassle in moments when least expected, lives can make 360 degree turns in a matter of time, and the pursuit of happiness grows with time. Imagine waking up at four in the morning feeling drowsy from yet another sleepless night just to get ready, sometimes grabbing the first thing you see to eat or perhaps nothing at all, then rushing off to catch the bus in the cold, unprepared for the random weather change, or in a rush trying to beat the traffic so you don’t get counted tardy. In today’s society, this is the typical morning of the average high school student. They spend countless hours of their days to find a balance in their lives worrying about deadlines and getting to class on time. If you think about it, the average student usually ends up getting little to no…

Schools barely have enough time to teach kids what they need to know for standardized tests. Rahm Emmanuel, the mayor of Chicago and a supporter of longer school days, said in an interview that because schools don’t have time, “students [essentially] have to pick between social studies versus science; math versus music; reading versus recess." (Schaper, 2012) At least one extra month of school would leave the door open to a lot of learning possibilities. Kids leave grade school and are not prepared for what is ahead of them.…
