Many question if it was it the boys who were really in fault because they encouraged him to do mischievous tasks or was it his parents which pressured him to disobey them which led to him having no choice? Could Mr. Keating’s transcendental lessons cause the death of Neil? Nevertheless, the school wanted to point fingers at an individual. So, unsurprisingly, the academy picked the adult.…

Many individuals in today’s society believe that by conforming themselves to other people’s tastes or likes is the only way to be accepted. Conformity can be seen as good or bad through many point of views. One could be that it’s penitentiary of one’s uniqueness because everyone tends to insult or disrespect each other’s features. One pro could be that everyone can be exactly the same where no one can stand out. In the short story “The Pedestrian” and the movie Dead Poets Society it emphasizes on the idea of nonconformity by showing how the main characters face individuals who do not respect their actions.…

Well, have no fear, because Dead Poets Society contains its fair share of them. I felt that the most interesting plot twist occurred towards the end of the movie, where Neil (Robert Sean Leonard) commits suicide after finally caving in from all of the pressure his father had put on him. This was a twist that I didn’t see coming and I felt that it was fresh to see something that deviated from the standard plot. I’m not saying I like suicide; I’m just saying I like a refreshing story. A second feature of Dead Poets Society that I really enjoyed was its use of humor.…

During my freshman year of high school, I discovered a personal truth, that I have no limitations other than those I choose to place upon myself. As the oldest child I have often faced many challenges and obstacles, but my family's support and my determination to succeed has kept me persistent. Three years ago, my mother had surgery and spent over two weeks at the hospital while my brothers and I remained at home. My mother's absence was a tormenting experience in which made me more conscious of the responsibilities I had as the oldest sibling. As one of the most well-known movies in America, does Dead Poet’s Society promote the controversial ideas of transcendentalism? Furthermore, should Mr. Keating’s advice be followed? While some may say the movie demotes transcendentalism based off of the characters’ rather unfortunate endings, the ideals of the movie prove otherwise. The movie follows the story of Mr. Keating, a teacher who imbues private school students with transcendentalist values, and because he is the main protagonist, the audience roots for him. Through his lessons and perspective, director Peter Weir uses Dead Poet’s Society to support the transcendentalist ideas of nonconformity, free thought, and confidence.…

Rob Baker’s Jimmy Santiago Baca: Poetry as a Lifesaver (Baker 858), writes an interesting story of Chicano poet Jimmy Santiago Baca (who goes by Baca in the story), and the amazing account of a young man’s start at life at the very bottom of society’s ladder, through his many trials and tribulations throughout childhood to his inevitable incarceration in the state’s prison system. Baker takes it one step further in his story as he provides a glimpse of not only the hell this young man must endure while in prison but the chance meeting of an author working through a church outreach program for inmates that forever changed his life. The message of the story to me is that everyone has value and a voice. A person, such as Baca in this story,…
