Cathedral churches were founded in Europe in the 11th century and lasted until the 16th century. The cathedrals were built quickly and added to as the funds became available. Most of the the senior clergies funded the construction of the cathedrals and the bishops could fund at own discretion. Construction consisted of brick and mortar instead of the more expensive limestone. Although when construction first started everything was made of wood, but later stopped due to the many fires. The floorplan in Christian Cathedrals was shaped to look like a cross with the head of the cross pointed towards jerusalem.
