In Florence Kelley’s Speech against Child Labor, it explains the hard life of children and the pain that the children went through. Thousands of children were forced to work all night and others worked almost eleven hours a day. For example, it shows the struggle Richard Abernathy went through as a child. In the story it states, “Richard was struggling to repair a machine and had accidentally broken it beyond repair. The cotton mill owner was so frustrated with Richard that he tightened a heavy weight around Richard's neck and forced him to walk around the mill for an hour…. This happened so often that Richard had developed neck problems by the age of ten” (paragraph 3 ). This shows that when he did something wrong it would be setting an example for the other children so that the children wouldn’t make the same mistake. At 10 years old Richard had neck problems and couldn’t work as hard as the other children he also had a higher chance of hurting himself while working or doing the job wrong. It also states, “ It was very hot where Richard worked, because the spinning needed a warm temperature.” (paragraph 2).
