In Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, the creature's internal need for love drives his need for human approval. The creature had been watching over the De Lancey family for quite some time. He secretly helped with their labor and grew a deep love for them.“The more I saw of them, the greater became my desire to claim their protection and kindness; my heart yearned to be known and loved by these amiable creatures;... I dared not think that they would turn them from me with disdain and horror”(146). The word desire means a longing, or craving, for something that brings satisfaction or enjoyment. Which ultimately will have more power than how people think about you. When the monster finally reveals himself to the De Lancy family, right away he is not treated with respect or love. Instead, he is being perceived as ugly and being attacked. In response to how he is being attacked, he says, “I could have torn him limb to limb, as a lion rents the antelope. But my heart sunk within me as the bitter sickness, and I refrained. I saw him on the point of repeating his blow, overcome by pain and anguish”(148). Although the monster is physically hurt, he doesn’t fight back. He loved the family and didn’t want to hurt those he loved. When he finds out how they perceive him without really knowing him, he describes his “heart sunk within me as the bitter sickness.” “Bitter sickness” describes a feeling of uneasiness and unenjoyment. Although he wanted to be loved by them, he internally ended up just feeling worse than he had
