2 The role of secondary characters is a crucial part of any work of literature, including plays. In the play "Rome and Juliet", by William Shakespear, Friar Lawrence is a secondary character who makes a considerable impact on the story. His character elaborates on the themeof tragic love. Without the character of Friar Lawrence, the story wouldn't have such a dramatic and tragic ending. He influences important events of the play, and also reveals more of Romeo and Juliet's characteristics.Lawrence Friar can ultimately be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet in this tragiclove story. He also provides Juliet with the sleeping potion which was done with good intentions but did not have a good outcome. He thought these things would help Romeo and Juliet be together and end the feud between both families. In the end, it ended up contributing to both of the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.The secondary character, Friar Lawrence, also reveals new characteristics of Romeo and Juliet. He shows Romeo is immature when he talks about his new love, Juliet; "Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear, so soon forsaken? Young men's love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes" (II. iii. 846). He shows how Romeo isn’t in love with Juliet, but rather loves her because she is beautiful. He also reveals that Juliet is courageous, because she is willing to risk drinking the poison; "Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself... nd if thou darest, I will give thee remedy" (IV. i. 897) Friar Lawrence is an important secondary character in the play "Romeo and Juliet". Without him the tragic ending would have never happened, and some parts of the characters wouldn't have been revealed.
