On Gender Equality Commercials
Gender equality has been a topic discussed worldwide. What makes it so controversial? The social norm is widely tackled even in the most developed countries we know of. This issue has been historic, as it all comes down to the way our living societies have portrayed a human’s characteristic. From an early age, a child is assigned a specific role to play, which is meant to shape his or her personality. They are taught a specific way to dress, to talk, to sit and to even eat. Although the commercial “Gender Equality” implies a logical and statistical approach towards the stereotypes women face, “#LikeAGirl” commercial is more effectual in delivering its message of women empowerment and to alter the way a female is portrayed in our society through its use of rhetorical strategies of ethos, visual text, and dialogues.
The “#LikeAGirl” commercial unwraps its content with an appeal to the credibility of its audience through the use of testimonials from common human beings. For instance, the people were asked to play several roles “like a girl” with their own perception. They were asked to “run like a girl,” the actions played by the people had a strong influence of the gender being mentioned to play. They portrayed a weak and lethargic personality, although on the contrary side when asked to play the same role in the way they wanted to portray themselves, the presentation was completely opposite, showing a powerful women's personality, mentioning “I would run like myself.” Outcomes of performing an action should not depend on the gender performing it but should depend on the capabilities of the individual.
