The dataset also focuses on demographic and socio-economic variables. Some of the variables that are covered includes crime, family, mental health, high risk behaviors, racial identity, and the environment. For the whole dataset, the total sample size was 2,538 people. The number of males 1,141 while the number of females was 1,397. This meant that 45% were males and 55% were females. When it comes to our particular part of the research, we had 1,244 participants in total.
We selected two raw variables for our research. The two variables include depression and years of service in the United States military. The dependent variable in this circumstance is depression and the independent variable is the number of years in the military. Our dependent variable is coded as two categories. The first category is ‘yes’ and the second one is ‘no’. Pertaining to the independent variable, it is categorized in five categories.
