Stress is the main source of deviant behaviors and also people who experience stress experience negative emotion engage in deviant behavior. General strain theory relates to the negative relationships shared with others. Agnew (1992) states that there are three different sources of stress that can result in these negative relationships: situations that obstruct achievement of positive values, situations that remove positively valued, and situations that produce negative stimuli. These negative affective states can include emotions such as fear, anger, frustration, or depression that can lead to individuals coping through crime. Agnew claims there are two hypothesis when it comes to general strain theory: People experiencing negative …show more content…
Listwan et al. (2013) research suggests that imprisonment may increase subsequent levels of offending. Consistent with GST, data from a sample of 1,613 recently released inmates in Ohio suggest that certain types of these strains do increase the likelihood of recidivism. These results challenge specific deterrence theory and claims by public officials that painful prisons will reduce reoffending. This shows that strain that the prisoners endured in prison cause them to recidivate and commit crimes. Another research article describe the patterns of college students drinking patterns based on frequency and quantity, the literature does not specifically reflect the drinking patterns of African American college students (Walton, Dawson-Edwards, Higgins 2015). Further, research is also limited in examining the drinking patterns of college students attending Historically Black Colleges versus those attending majority serving institutions. This research focuses on the drinking patterns of African-American women attending a Historically Black College. The general strain theory is used to analyze the indicators of African American women drinking habits while in college. Our findings indicate that strain brought up depressive issues, which resulted binge drinking to cope with the issues. Moreover, the more days of stressful life events …show more content…
Listwan et al. (2013) article refers to the general strain theory when it says that if you have strain in your life, negative emotions with result, followed by coping with such strain. Students were more likely to engage in deviant behaviors if they were emotionally punished by teachers and were discriminated by their race. However is in this article, the findings showed that anger had no significant effect linking strains to deviance and that interaction factors between strain and conditioning variables had limited effects on deviance (Moon et. al 2009). This would be a limitation of the general strain theory. To summarize general strain theory we can say that stress is the main source of deviant behaviors and also people who experience stress experience negative emotion engage in deviant behavior.
