Language Deprivation Syndrome Sanjay Gulati is a medical doctor who has been working with Deaf children for over 20 years in the state of Massachusetts. In his lecture, Language Deprivation Syndrome, he went into detail about what causes Language Deprivation Syndrome (LDS), Theory of Mind (ToM) and if assistive devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants actually help avoid these issue. These topics were of great interest to me since I am going into the medical field and do not have any prior knowledge. Gulati stated that the most important issues in the deaf world and community is LDS. LDS is formed when a primary language is not developed; which also termed as L1.…

In the spring of 1951, Alice Eaton Valli gave birth to a little boy. Alice and her husband, Frances Valli, were of course very excited. They had traveled all the way from Seabrook, New Hampshire to Newburyport, Massachusetts to give birth to a perfectly healthy and normal baby. However, this little boy was not considered a “normal” baby, because he was deaf. Thus, on May 25, 1951, a great deaf poet was brought into the world.…
In this paper, I will argue that the paradoxes Oliver Sacks mentions in his essay "The Mind's Eye" have only one purpose, that is, to show us the complex working of the brain and its ability to overcome disability. The paradoxes are made an integral part of the essay because each paradox mentioned shows us how the human brain can adapt and find creative and ingenious ways to cope with physical losses and disorders. In his essay, Sacks seemingly breaks the norm. Yet, it seems like those who were victims of neurological disorder seem better off blind. Sacks essay is mainly based on subjective experiences, rather than objective experiences.…
The book “Deaf Like Me” by Thomas S. Spradley and James P. Spradley intrigued because it was about a hearing family that had a deaf daughter. I was also interested that the book was written in the perspective of the father. The statistic that vast majority of deaf children are born to hearing parents has always made me fascinated with what each hearing parent has done for their deaf child. I knew that this story would most likely have a happy ending considering the title “Deaf Like Me” I made the inference that maybe his daughter would find inclusion from being emerged in the culture of deaf individuals. “Deaf Like Me” followed the story of the parents Tom and Louise Spradley in the early 1960s.…
Most see a disability as an impairment of normal function; however, some see a disability as a source of creativity and innovation. Being blind means that one does not exist in the perceptual world of sight; on the contrary, that individual may have a greater presence in the perceptual world of touch, taste, smell, and hearing. Therefore, a conclusion may be drawn that a perceptual world is different for each individual but, that perceptual world contributes to the experience of the individual regardless of its constituents. In a few case studies of paradoxical neurological disorders Oliver Sacks illustrates the perceptual words of those who differ from the norm. Oliver Sacks was a British born neurologist that spent the majority of his professional life in the United States.…
Child neglect involves acts of omission, but there is no consensus as to whether the focus should be on the child’s unmet needs, the parents’ or guardians’ behavior, or actual/potential harm to children (Tang, 2008). White & Hoskins (2011) defined neglect as an act of omission that results in the failure to provide for a child’s basic needs, which in turn results in the harm of the child. In her definition of child neglect, Tang (2008) divides the child’s unmet basic needs into two categories – physical and/or psychological. In the year 2014, there have been an estimated 702,000 victims of child maltreatment in the United States, 75.0% of which were victims of child neglect (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Children 's Bureau,…
When writing scientifically, the content of the written document should be comprehensible to the audience. For this reason, scientists and researchers tailor their work to appeal the targeted audience and achieve their goal. The beginning of any scientific writing is the formation of a scientific idea. This idea is conveyed through a grant proposal and if approved, then the experiment can be conducted. After the research is over, the experiment is relayed into a peer-review article and review articles.…
