One of the major things he did in office was pardoned Nixon 's actions. This was Ford’s way of saying he does not hold any of Watergate against Nixon. This however caused confusion for the people because they thought that his actions had been arranged prior to Nixon’s resignation. “The pardon meant that Nixon would never face any criminal charges with his involvement in the Watergate scandal” (A&E Networks). This did not help Ford out, it just cause speculation with how Ford thought about the scandal. During his early years in office, he faced problems with the economy and its high rate of unemployment and inflation. Also the U.S was going through an energy crisis where we were using to much energy. Ford had both successes and failures throughout the process of solving these problems. However he may not have been able to solve all of these problems, but he was able to ease the tensions between the U.S and Soviet Union. Since our previous history with the Soviet Union has not been all that great, it was one of his more successful accomplishments. For Ford to help ease the tensions there was a document signed called the Helsinki Accords. The reason for this document was to help with global issues, and it also had an effect on the Cold War. This document also helped relieve communist intentions in Europe and western countries. Once his term was coming to an end he knew that by pardoning Nixon’s actions it would hurt his chances at re-election. In the 1976 election, Gerald Ford ran for his second term against Jimmy Carter.
