Great Plains University (GPU) was founded May 21, 1871, as the State Normal College of Jacksonville and began classes with forty-five students and five instructors. Today, GPU, as it has become emotionally known, the premiere school for research and is devoted to sending Gators into the field. GPU offers thirty-six graduate-level degree and certificate programs through their Bridge Education program in structures available yonder campus via online, video conference, or remote classrooms.

Manning (2013) discussed the anthropological framework as a method that embraced an egalitarian approach. GPU adopted the anthropological framework in 1965 after several hours of deliberation among the board of trustee (BOT) members, the university president, provost, and students. The anthropological method allows all stakeholders to play a role in the shaping of university culture (Manning, 2013). The mission statement was revised to reflect the anthropological framework and now states, “Preparing stewards to provide service and charity; furthermore, worshipping diversity to propel greatness within the self, state, and society.”

Manning (2013) described the collegium model as a non-hierarchical structure that endorses peer as opposed to authority relationships. The collegium model embodies fluid participation which facilitates decision-making at an institution-wide level (2013). Furthermore, the collegium model endorses teaching, research, and service to the community and offers academic excellence at the institution and national level (Manning, 2013).
