Graduation Speech: Where Did You Play Softball

Decent Essays
As a baseball player, I spent countless hours on the field playing and practicing. Baseball is one component which has taught me how to strategize, a positive attitude and a solid foundation in balancing school and sports. It is a lot of fun when you get to play baseball every day for three hours or until the sun goes down. I am sure if you played on a travel softball team you practiced for long hours and played many double headers. I think it is wonderful your dad was your coach so you were able to practice with your team. I bet your dad was able to teach you so many skills off the field too. You were so lucky to have your dad coach you. What position did you play? Where did you play softball in college? Did you play softball year round

I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

After that day, the coaches started giving me a lot of attention. Coach Premo would stay after practice and work with me; we would also go to the YMCA to work out before school every day. We've all been there: you feel like you tried really hard but, despite your best efforts, you still failed. With softball, along with really any sport, there will be times that you will lose. In my experience, there was a time when my team suffered a really tough loss. We hung our heads as we walked to the outfield, expecting our coaches to chew our tails and make us feel like dirt. But, despite our loss, our coaches were still very proud of us.…

Partway through my first Junior Varsity baseball practice, it was clear that I was the least qualified player on the team. Still learning the basics of baseball, I was pulled aside by the coaches and told that they were still uncertain of their decision and that they would be monitoring my progress to determine eligibility. As soon as I got home, I studied baseball through any video, started attending every practice offered, and constantly requested one-on-one coaching sessions. My coaches slowly took notice of my commitment and my rapidly developing skill set in baseball.…

Sports teams are made up of those with natural born and learned talent. My talent was learned, although, some have said I was born a natural athlete. An infielder and coach devoting a huge portion of his life to major league baseball, Don Zimmer, once said, “What you lack in talent can be made up with desire, hustle, and giving 110 percent all the time.” The story of how I fell in love with the game of softball is a story like no other.…
