The south adopted a southern form of Christianity that they believed justified their horrible actions. “There is a great difference between Christianity and religion at the south. If a man goes to the communion table, and pays money into the treasury of the church, no matter if it be the price of blood, he is called religious. If a pastor has offspring by a woman not his wife, the church dismiss him, if she is a white woman; but if she is colored, it does not hinder his continuing to be their good shepherd.” (Ch. XIII) Religion had a big influence on how white and black people made sense of the world around them. Christian hypocrites used religion as a way to make their slaves more submissive to their masters. Masters used “southern” style religion as a way to keep their slaves docile and ignorant. The sermons were filled with lies such as “If you disobey your earthly master, you offend your heavenly Master”. (Ch. XIII) Southern Christianity was used to poison the mind of the innocent slaves who were in search of lighter and more comfortable thoughts amongst the hell on earth. Everyone was affected by slavery it was a plague that blanketed the south, crippling both white and black people. The northerners were not immune to the toxicity that is slavery. Through much perseverance she was able to rise from the hell she was born in. Harriet had so many good characteristics that she was able to free herself from slavery and support herself and children up north. She was able to provide a life for her children that she never had the opportunity to. Harriet eventually finds a happy ending next to her two children and brother. Her story has shed light on one of our countries darkest and misguided
