American philosopher Henry David Thoreau wrote, “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” Now, I have never been a big fisher, but Thoreau’s words speak for more than just fishermen. Like anyone who has participated in a sport from a young age, I didn’t realize the influence sports would have on my life when I first started. It took years and years of participation to notice how each sport I played growing up impacted my career goals, my relationship with my family, and myself overall.
Soccer, hockey, lacrosse, golf, and tennis are typically the words I grew up describing myself as. Without knowing at the time, these sports really were what made me, me! Today, I don’t participate in all these

I am extremely grateful for growing up with a loving, and supporting family, and sports have only helped improve our relationship. Although long weekends of tournaments and practices may be exhausting for my parents, they continue to encourage me. Along with the immense support of my parents and siblings, I am constantly being pushed by my teammates who are also my closest friends. There is something amazingly different about chasing a goal as a team, versus chasing a goal alone. Even in the individual sports I have played like tennis and golf have a sense of comradery. When I am down on myself about a mistake I may have made, I know I cannot quit because the other girls are relying on me, and the same goes both ways. And after a difficult game or practice as teammates, it’s very relieving to be able to recollect as friends afterwards. Sports have not only influenced by life and relationships, but my career goals too. I plan on attending Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut where I will study to become a Physician Assistant. This field of study is competitive just like the sports I grew up playing, but I do not plan to abandon sports once I begin my career. As a Physician Assistant, I will be able to specialize in any area of medicine. With this, I hope to specialize in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation where I can help athletes get back to the sport they

From a young age, I had to compete for my father’s affections. He was more athletically oriented and therefore inclined to my brother. As a result, my brother participated in hockey, soccer, and bowling much to his dismay as sports were not his particular forte. Much of my life has been devoted to extracurricular activities such as sports and the comelec, which taught me hard lessons in ethics and values that have made me who I am today. I not only represented my school varsity, but also sports clubs outside of school, which led me to compete in several local and international tournaments. As well as my passion for sports, I grew into my passion for service; service for others and for my school, partaking in clubs and community service activities, each endeavor playing a role in the development of my abilities and expansion of my potential…

While growing up, sports have always been a big part of my life. At the age of only six years old, my parents first signed me up for coach pitch softball. Being so young when I first started playing, winning and losing did not matter at all. As long as I got to throw, hit, and catch the ball, I was happy.…

Playing sports has taught me how to focus only on what I am doing. For instance, I did cheerleading for eleven years of my life and during competitions I had to perform a routine in front of hundreds of people and judges along with my team. I couldn’t mess up and if I did the team would get points deducted. That meant I had to drown out the cheering crowd and ignore the judges and focus on the team, the music, and myself.…
