Why would you run into a burning church? That is what Ponyboy Curtis and Dallas (Dally) Winston do in S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders when they see the Windrixville church on fire. That is why the most heroic Greasers are Dally Winston, Ponyboy Curtis, and Darry Curtis. (Darry did not help save the church but there are other reasons he is a heroic character.)
Now, you may be wondering why anyone would choose Dally he is violent, wreckless, and a "tuff" guy but Dally is not all bad. Dally was chosen, because he is very brave. Dally is never scared of fights, he is never scared of cops, and overall not scared of anyone or anything. Dally was also chosen because right after Ponyboy ran into the burning church, Dally quickly followed behind which is a heroic act. That is also brave because there is a good chance that you will get injured or even die. Dally also gave Ponyboy and Johnny $50.00 so they could run away and stay low for awhile.
The next heroic Greaser happens to be the main character of the book. 14 year old Ponyboy Curtis is one of the youngest guys in the Greaser gang but certainly the most mature and heroic. Ponyboy Curtis' older brother. Darry isn't really a main character throughout the book but from the times that we do read about him, he seems like he is a very hard working man. He is too he works with building houses so that would be a very back-breaking job that requires lots of strength. Darry is also the supporter of the family since the Curtis brother's parents died in a fatal car wreck.
