This memo is for the purpose of advising your department in the area of advertisement. It is an honor to work with such a well know company as Hershey’s and I am confident that my analysis will help your company reach its target audience more effectively. I have analyzed your advertisement for Hershey’s Kisses which appeared in the November 2002 issue of FamilyFun on page 137. This magazine primarily targets parents. Although a child might occasionally flip through, mothers (especially) and fathers would be this advertisement’s primary audience. My first thought was “Why is there so much white space?” Many others have probably wondered the very same thing. The white space is overwhelming and it almost gives the impression that the artists who designed the ad ran out of time, resources, or creativity. I suggest that a heartwarming Christmas image be inserted in the background. A picture of a couple curled up on the couch drinking hot coco would be a better choice. This will engage the reader and give the ad a setting and the potential for a story. The colors should spring forth from the page in all their glory. The Christmas jingle currently featured below the kisses is cute and should be a more prominent element of the advertisement. The text should be larger and a more elegant (or jollier) font should be used. The kisses should still be the prominent feature of the ad. With these changes to the appearance comes the potential for many additional emotional appeals. The cabin in the woods sort of feeling in the imagery could speak to the need to escape, and the couple curled up by the fire could speak to the need to feel safe or the need for sex. If a couple of children or a baby was added to the picture, the ad could also speak to the need to
