Hawthorn is stating that Chillingworth tried his best to help the pastor, for the community was concerned for his health, as was Chillingworth himself. Chillingworth may have been a good man, but he was also very dark. “Art thou like the Black Man that haunts the forest round about us? Hast thou enticed me into a bond that will prove the ruin of my soul?” expresses the dark and evil side of Chillingworth, which is seeking for revenge. Roger Chillingworth is up to no good when it comes to Hester Prynne and eventually Roger Chillingworth.
