In early October 1347 twelve Genoese Gallery entered Messina Harbour.
The people of Messina noticed the men with unusual black boils on their bodies. Anyone who spoke to the men quickly developed a boil the size of a lentil on their thighs and upper arms. This resembled a “burn boil”. The patient would then vomit blood for 3 days after which on the 4th day the patient expired.
