When we as a society categorize ourselves base on genders we limit our abilities to act politically and in our personal lives. In Julia Serrano’s piece “Why Nice Finish Last” Serano talks about rape culture, and stereotypes with our society. She has spoke and studied about transgender and queer issues. In Roxane Gay’s piece “Bad Feminist”, Gay talks about views on feminism in society, and what the meaning of a “bad feminist” is. Gay has her worked appeared in many different publications, and she is a New York Times Best Selling author. In Why Nice Guys Finish Last, Serano “explores her unique perspective on rape culture from her identity as a transgendered woman” (Serano 414) . While “Bad Feminist”, Gay “examines feminism and its inherent complications, often through the lens of pop culture” (Gay 168). In Gay’s piece, Gay describes what most people think of when they think of a feminist, an essential feminist. Essential feminism suggests that in order to be a feminist one must “hate pornography, unilatery decry objectification of women, don’t cater to the male gaze, hate men, hate sex, focus on career, don’t shave.” (Gay 169). This definition of feminism is not appealing, and most women do not want to be thought of this way.
