Piggy transforms from being a timid boy to a courageous person. At the beginning, Piggy gets pushed around by Ralph when he “shrieks with laughter and yells Piggy, Piggy.”(page 11) Piggy never liked his nickname that was given to him because of his physical appearance, and tells Ralph not to react once he tells him his name. But when he does, Piggy starts to feel embarrassed since Ralph is the only one on the island that seems like a friend. Also during the night, all the boys have an assembly and talk about Piggy’s name so they can bond; “He is not Fatty, his real name is Piggy.” (page 21) The boys start to bully Piggy once again because of his looks and asthma. When Ralph tells them his name, Piggy does not fight back, instead he lets Ralph and the boys dominate him since he knows they will beat him up if he argues.

Once Ralph and Piggy wake up they realize that something is missing and that “[Ralph] blinded” Piggy by “[stealing]” his glasses (page 169). Jack and his hunters take Piggy’s glasses for fire that will cook their meat. Once Ralph and Piggy find out, they become furious since Piggy is blind without his spectacles, which causes many major conflicts, such as the death of Piggy.Immediately after, Piggy and Ralph head towards Jack’s territory and start to accuse him, as well as tell him “to give them back. Thief, Thief.” (page 176) Piggy knows that Jack hates him, so when he calls Jack a “thief” in front of all his hunters, this symbolizes Piggy for standing up for himself. Eventually Piggy learns not to listen to others that disrespect someone, likewise not to pay attention to those who give back
