Shane Elizabeth Gould was born in Sydney, New South Wales on the 23rd November 1956. At the age of six she was a competent swimmer. She attended primary school at St. Peters Lutheran collage in Brisbane. Shane Gould is an Olympic gold swimmer and is the only person to ever hold all freestyle records and the 200m IM relay at one time. She married Milton Nelms in 2007 and they now live in Bicheno, Tasmania. She had four children: Joel 1978, Kim 1980, Tom 1982, Kristin (boy) 1983. She also has three grandchildren: Kobi 2004, Ariana 2006, Ava 2011.

She started to receive unprecedented nation and international fame for all her achievements but at this age and time in her life it was too overwhelming for her so she decided to pull out of competitive swimming at the age of 17.
After swimming:
When Shane stopped swimming she moved out of the public eye and she married Neil Innes at the age of 18. She lived on a farm in southwestern Australia where she raised commercial animals, trained horses, grew food and was active in the Margaret river community in sports, schools and community issues. During this time she raised four children. After 22 years she divorced Neil and moved back into the public life. In 2007 she married Milton Nelms and she moved to Bicheno, Tasmania. Shane stills maintains a high level of fitness, health and strength for her 56 years which still allows her to surf, ride horses and compete in swimming races. Shane has a strong belief that daily experiences in nature are vital for overall development, wellbeing and vitality.
