The story is set in the future in a place called Panem. Panem was once known as North America, but is now separated into twelve districts and a Capital. All of Panem is run by President Snow, the antagonist.
In the first book, the young protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, awakes in a cold bed, in a house where her, her mother and sister(Prim) stay. They live in District 12, the poorest district in Panem, where people are starving and hardly have the bare necessities to live. Katniss lost her father to an explosion in the coalmine, leaving her as the sole provider of her family. As Katniss becomes fully awake she remembers that today was ‘Reaping Day’, a day when all eligible teenagers names are drawn to see who has to compete in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are when two teenagers, one boy and one girl, are taken from each district, are trained for battle, and thrown into an arena to fight, until there is only one person standing. They call the teenagers who are drawn ‘tributes’. At the reaping Katniss’s young sister, Prim, and the baker 's son, Peeta, are chosen as tributes.
