In the story “The Fall of the House of Usher” Edgar Allen Poe used dark words to create the mood of fear. In the poem “Windigo,” by Louise Erdrich, fear was brought out by how her words made us feel. In the poem it says, “You dug your hands into my pale, melting fur”(Erdrich 108). In this line it uses the sense of touch, while reading it you can connect with the feeling. The reason you can connect so well is because most people have felt or touched the feeling of cold fur. By knowing the feeling and how the author describes it your mind thinks fear. Another big sense we have is sight. One of the lines in the poem says “The sumac push sour red cones through the air. Copper burned in the raw wood”(Erdrich 108). When you read this line you make an image in your head. You can make an image in your head because you have already seen similar things. When you make this image in your head you can see that the scene is scary. When you see that it looks scary you get the feeling of fear. Louise Erdrich really set the mood of fear by making us feel our senses.
In conclusion, the mood is set by imagery. The authors of “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “Windigo” really used wording to create images. Once we had these images in our head the mood was set. The mood was fear because of the dark words and senses they
