Social media can amplify social events and help raise awareness of issues relating to people amongst people. For example, the ALS ice bucket challenge. The ALS ice bucket challenge was to raise awareness and money for a disease known as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis AKA ALS. This is a disease that effects the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, the degeneration of the motor nneurone in the brain leads to inability to control muscle movement, and this leads to involuntary muscle action and eventually death. Therefore the ice bucket challenge was to temporarily replicate the effects of ALS by pouring a bucket of ice on your body and sharing this video online.
