Now I’ll give you a moment to get out your pens and paper or cell phone cameras… because now is time that you’re going to want to start taking notes. Okay, good? Good. Now, I’m going to go through these types of decisions in a purposeful order. Each type of decision is ranked on two very important factors: urgency (how soon it needs done) and importance (how badly it needs done). The first type of decision making is what I like to call “passable” others might also say “procrastinate-able” or “wait and see” decisions. These are the decisions that are not urgent OR important. An example of a passable decision is deciding whether or not to RSVP to you mom’s 5th cousin once removed’s daughter’s graduation party...that is six months away. These decisions should be at the bottom of your to-do list, especially in busy times for your business. Analyze Possible Outcomes- Think about how the decision would affect each of three parties: you, your company and employees, and your customers/clients. Weigh the pros and cons of each decision. (ex. Pros and cons of each candidate. How well would they fit in your company? How much training and supervision will they require?)
Take Action- Put you decision to the test (ex. Hire someone!)
Take Responsibility- Be accountable for your decision whether the outcome is good or bad. It shows that you value humility and are responsible. This is the most important step, (ex. If the hire does poorly, fix your mistake and apologize.)
If you follow these steps, with practice, you will be well on your way to becoming an effective decision maker and by extension an effective leader. Some of you are probably in leadership roles already, maybe you’ve even been in one for a long time. Despite that I hope that I will be able to teach you- or remind you- of something that you can do to be an even more effective leader. For those of you not in prominent positions of power I hope that this will motivate you to strive for those
