An honor code is a set of rules or ethical principles governing an academic community based on ideals that define what constitutes honorable behaviour within that community. Honor codes are often enforced in schools in order to create a center of trustworthy and honorable students. Here at Columbia High School, located in the small town of Nampa there is a relaxed honor code that enforces many characteristics of an ideal student and citizen. A few of these traits include; integrity, honesty, humility and determination. Through these unforgiving years of seemingly infinite homework and forgotten tests many students almost reach their breaking point. A whole lot of blood, sweat and tears is what it takes to obtain a well deserved educational career. But through it all, they finally make it to that beautiful light at the end of the tunnel as they reach out and take hold of their diploma. Pride is the satisfactory feeling that is derived from one’s achievements and is not an uncommon feeling for a student to feel as they near the finish of their successful educational career. It is due to this overwhelming feeling of pride that students are commanded not to cheat or plagiarize because everyone deserves to feel that satisfactory feeling swelling within their bosom. If a student spent two hours of focussed and determined work to finish their homework and brings it prepared to class the next day they are learning, becoming more self reliant and responsible. While another student comes to class unprepared and hurries and copies a classmate’s homework in less than ten minutes, they, on the other hand are not learning but are taking advantage of their classmates. The students who take the time to do their homework don’t want to be taken advantage of, they want their peers to work just as hard as them. According to Vangelli, “Implicit in an honor code is a belief in the integrity of human beings; it also provides students a clear explanation of the importance of behaving with the integrity and the expectation that our resulting actions will increase trust and respect in the… community”(paragraph 4). Through a student enforced honor code students will be able to trust that their hard work won’t be taken advantage of, and they can know that they are working just as hard as their classmates.
