Improving Scabies Management in nursing home
Scabies is a contagious skin disease and is caused by a mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. Infection is through direct contact and it has an incubation period of 4 weeks before patient’s symptoms appear (Canadian Pediatric Society, 2015). The classical sites of infections include axillary areas, between fingers, wrist, under pendulous breasts, in or near the groin or gluteal fold, penis, scrotum, Red, pruritic eruptions usually appear between adjacent skin areas, umbilical areas, inside legs and ankles (Brunner & Suddarth, 2016, p. 1805). Improving the personal hygiene of residents such as helping them to wash their hands after toilet, before and after meals has helped to combat scabies re-infection in the long-term home. Also PSW reporting residents that are resistive and refusing shower to the nurse and the appropriate action of the nurse to give PRN medication before shower to calm such residents to take their shower has helped to put a stop to the spread and re-occurrence of scabies. Hand washing education was re-enforced on the affected floor. Any staff seen not doing proper hand washing before and after given care to each was reported. Where the staff continue with improper hand washing, he/she was disciplined. Staff were also educated on the need for proper ventilation in long-term homes. They were encouraged to open windows in resident rooms to allow fresh air to circulate especially during the summer. For about 4 years now, there has not been any scabies infection in that long- term
