In the second stanza the narrator witnesses Tom’s loss of innocence: “There’s little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head / That curled like a lamb’s back, was shaved:” (Stanza 2). The image of Tom crying because he was losing his hair is so vivid. We often take little things like that for granted. Losing his hair wasn’t about vanity; it was a choice being taken away from Tom.
