Infant mortality rates are a terrible thing to look at. The city of Milwaukee for example, had 25% of Wisconsin’s infant deaths in the year 2010. Even though the number of births and the number of infant deaths has been declining in Milwaukee, it is still a serous problem. Between the years of 2009-2011, Milwaukee had a total of 205 stillbirths and 318 infant births. With the black population having the highest total infant mortality rate at 14.0 per 1,000 deaths. That is more than triple the white infant mortality rate at 4.6, with the Hispanic rate coming in at 8.0. The causes for these infant deaths can be narrowed down to three main categories. I had no idea that there were this many infant deaths in Milwaukee, the U.S., or any country for that matter. One connection that I kept noticing was that poverty played a huge role in infant mortality deaths. The higher the poverty rate, the more infant deaths occurred. This I expected. When people are impoverished, they are not going to have access to the best hospitals, doctors, or education of what to do prenatally, which is extremely unfortunate and disheartening. Some things that might help lower the infant mortality rate in Milwaukee would be to promote education prenatally. Where mothers and their partners could read brochures, pamphlets, or books that people had donated, or talk to physicians. Places such as Planned Parenthood would be extremely helpful in this case. In addition to this, enforcing rules and regulations at hospitals or clinics, to lower the racism and prejudice that occurs throughout Milwaukee would help. It is shocking that the Black population has a rate that is triple the amount of the white population. Hopefully these suggestions could help lower the infant mortality rates in Milwaukee. In India, also promoting better sanitation and promoting prenatal education would help as well. It would be difficult though because India is extremely impoverished and most hospitals cannot take in everybody. Perhaps if doctors were to travel around to the rural areas and make sure that people what to do prenatally and provide educational pamphlets and brochures, this might help with lowering the infant mortality rate as
